I am very grateful to have been appointed ‘artist in residence’ for 2024, by the Friends of Chichester Harbour. My small Sprit dinghy shall be my transport around this beautiful, natural place and harbour.
I hope to inspire in some way through my paintings, all of our great need to look after and treasure this immensely valuable resource. There is so much natural ‘healing’ to be found here, walking, sailing and nature watching.
My admiration and love of Chichester Harbour, stems from its place and history. I first came her aged about 8 or 9, and with its tides it was akin to London…but of course the big skies and multitudes of boats, was very different. The wildlife of the harbour is of continuous attraction for me. I have much to learn about it all.
Sailing boats of all sizes, are of interest too but especially “classic” yachts and dinghies…

Having two small boats of my own, I can relate to the power of feelings one possesses for our boat. They protect and transport us, tease and challenge. The blue one is a classic Osprey, ‘Mischief’ of 1967 and the other is Kairos, a wooden sprit sail, Highlander 12.

Marga was photographed at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez in 2015, by professional James Robinson Taylor, who kindly allowed me to paint his photograph. Marga was built in 1910, she raced in the 1912 Olympics. In recent years, Marga has been extensively restored in Italy. She is some 51 ft on deck. There is much more information about her online.

Each Sunday during Spring & Summer, the NSSC race off Seaford beach in Sussex. This was the Commodore, Terry Jones pushing his Dart 15 into the sea, on a very hot July day.

The Galaxidi wooden boat festival takes place in September in Greece. Enthusiasts of traditional boats, that once frequented every village bordered by the Mediterranean, build, bring and sail their boats over a 3 day festival, from France, Italy and the UK.
I found the reflection mesmerising, and wanted to paint it.
